What Are Full Mouth Dental Implants?

Full mouth dental implants are a permanent solution when you have a lot of missing teeth. Four to eight implants per row will be inserted to keep your mouth healthy, as they take the place of the roots. Then a replacement set of teeth are attached to this which could be a dental bridge or dentures.

The types of dental implants are: all-on-4 dental implants (which is the less complex and inexpensive version), all-on-six dental implants (which do much of the same but with 6 entry points), zirconia bridges, full implants with no dentures and traditional removable prosthetics.

Who Can or Should Have Full Mouth Dental Implants?

In order to be eligible for implants, you must have a healthy mouth. This means healthy gums. If you have an infection in the mouth, it needs to be taken care of before they can place implants, or this will lead to complications. You should also have adequate jaw bone structure. If you have been missing teeth for a while, you may have had little stimulation to the bone, which will lead to jawbone loss. You should also be prepared for a long procedure as it can take 2-6 months for the upper implant. The lower will take 2-3 months.

What is the Procedure for Full Mouth Dental Implants?

This is an outpatient procedure, where the dentist will first take some x-rays to determine the bone strength in your mouth. From here, they insert the number of implants needed with titanium screws. Once this is healed, they can place the new tooth crowns onto the screws, so you have a permanent new set of teeth. You may then have to go to more appointments to ensure the procedure works and remains healthy.

What are the Benefits?

There are many reasons to have this procedure performed, for one they preserve the bone in your jaw. This can affect the structure of your face over time, preventing things such as sagging in the corners of the mouth. It also will help someone permanently, so they can eat, talk and use their jaw without problems arising. The shifting of remaining teeth due to tooth loss can also cause problems. Dental implants put a stop to this problem.

Titanium dental implants derive strength from the bone and gum that grow around the implant, so they do not need to be replaced for at least 30 years. Plus, they look natural. It’s hard to tell the difference between implants and natural teeth.
